In our quest to interview leaders of growing small businesses, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to sit down with Michael Weinhouse, Logical Position Co-CEO and founder. Mr Weinhouse told us about his Portland, Oregon beginnings, his stint in the financial industry and a big mistake he made early on.
What made you want to start your own business?
Michael Weinhouse: We were created to help small and medium sized companies grow their businesses using digital marketing strategies.
What services do you offer at Logical Position?
Michael Weinhouse: Logical Position is a full-service digital marketing agency specializing in paid search management, search engine optimization and website development.
How did you come to find this niche?
Michael Weinhouse: I started in advertising sales with a large multi-national company and saw an opportunity to use the same techniques that big businesses were using to help small and medium sized companies.
Let’s talk background. Can you tell us a bit about yours, including your education and work history?
Michael Weinhouse: I was born and raised in the Portland, Oregon area and graduated from Portland State University where I earned a BS in Economics. Directly out of college, I worked as a financial planner for A.G. Edwards and Sons. After the stock market recession in the early 2000’s, I left the financial industry to pursue a career in advertising sales.
Have you made any significant mistakes, or experienced any unexpected obstacles along the way?
Michael Weinhouse: Very early on we paid over 20k for a website that we only used for a few months. We ultimately decided to scrap it and build one in house.
Wow. That had to hurt! So you’ve told us about a mistake. How about a challenge? What do you find to be the biggest challenge in running your own business?
Michael Weinhouse: I think pacing our growth has been the biggest challenge. We have the resources and ability to grow as fast as we want but we have to do it in a way that will not compromise our corporate culture.
Finally, how many employees do you have and what is your management style?
Michael Weinhouse: We have 65 people on staff and I subscribe to management by walking around. I like to talk to my employees and listen to them.
